Memory foam mattress offers cool, contouring support while hugging the body like no other material can. But what constitutes an ideal memory foam mattress?
Firmness is of vital importance; side sleepers typically favor soft memory foam that embraces their shoulders and hips while back sleepers generally opt for medium-firm mattresses.
The Nectar
The Nectar mattress is an all-foam mattress with medium firmness that’s suitable for most sleeping positions, from back and side sleepers to those who switch between these positions throughout the night. Plus, its responsiveness means it bounces right back quickly after tossing and turning!
The cover is constructed of quilted, polyblend fabric designed to wick heat away from your body and is hypoallergenic and breathable, making this mattress an excellent choice for people who tend to get hot in bed. While heavy sleepers might find this mattress too warm for them, its durability might decline over time and lose some shape as time goes on.
The Nectar stands out among memory foam mattresses by having excellent edge support, scoring 9/10 in our test for edge support and making it an excellent option for anyone who likes sleeping near the edge or uses their mattress as a seat in the morning. Furthermore, its limited motion transfer makes it ideal for couples sharing rooms.
If you tend to wake frequently during the night or are an occasional light sleeper, this mattress may not be for you. Its slow response memory foam layers may cradle you more than other models; while this could be a turnoff for some individuals, others will appreciate its classic memory foam feel and may find comfort therein.
The Nectar mattress is an ideal option for most side sleepers due to its 2-inch memory foam layer that contours to their bodies, alleviating pressure on shoulders and hips. It is also suitable for moderate and heavier weight back and stomach sleepers; however petite side sleepers might find it too firm.
The Siena
The Siena mattress is an economical all-foam model that provides significant pressure relief and motion isolation, ideal for light sleepers who prefer traditional memory foam feels. Couples sharing beds may find solid edge support and minimal motion transfer with this mattress option.
Resident Home offers this bed in six standard sizes including California king, with free bed-in-a-box shipping making unpacking and inflation easy. A soft polyester cover woven with polyethylene fibers to regulate temperature and wick away moisture is featured, along with 2-inch gel-infused memory foam sitting atop a molded transitional layer featuring ripples for airflow management and prevent body heat build-up, followed by five 5.5-inch dense polyfoam layers which provide foundational support and stabilize the mattress.
Our lead tester found the memory foam layers to be comfortable and well-formed, and appreciated how much pressure relief she experienced across her hips and shoulders. She enjoyed sleeping soundly on the Siena mattress but found that it took some time to break in fully; for her personally it didn’t provide enough cushioning along her sides but did retain its form well compared to other options she tested.
An additional plus of this mattress is its relative coolness despite being constructed entirely out of foam. The breathable polyester blend cover contains Sealy’s proprietary “Phase Change Material,” designed to absorb and disperse heat for an improved sleeping surface. Unfortunately, however, this layer cannot be removed or machine washed and should therefore be protected with a mattress protector for optimal use.
The Siena mattress from Resident Home features an industry-leading 180-night sleep trial period and 10-year warranty, making it a top budget mattress option. Resident Home also runs sales and holiday promotions to bring its price even lower; while we still prefer Nectar as it accommodates a wider variety of sleepers with its Forever Warranty coverage. Overall though, the Siena is an excellent budget mattress option.
The Puffy
The Puffy is a memory foam mattress available in multiple firmness options. As it tends to be on the soft side, this might make it ideal for side sleepers seeking comfort while back sleepers looking for plushness. Furthermore, its motion isolation properties ensure your partner won’t experience disturbance during restful sleep.
It features three layers of foam, including gel-infused Cooling Cloud foam designed to reduce heat buildup and wick away moisture, Oeko-Tex certified, hypoallergenic, stain resistant cover material and Oeko-Tex certification for stain resistance. Furthermore, there’s a 7-inch system of pocketed coils called Contour Adapt which are reinforced by dense foam along the perimeter for strength along edges of mattress so you can sleep close without sinking in too deeply.
Next comes a layer of high-density memory foam to balance contouring with support, then polyfoam to stop you sinking too deeply and prevent indentations or sagging over time. Finally, Puffy incorporates its Climate Comfort transition layer for enhanced temperature regulation and humidity resistance.
Our average-weight tester found the Puffy to be on the soft side, so it may not provide sufficient support for stomach sleepers or those preferring firmer mattresses overall. However, its supportive foam was able to cradle her hips and shoulders comfortably reducing pain in these areas of her body while sleeping on her stomach – although some neck strain occurred occasionally so this mattress may not be an optimal choice for petite or larger stomach sleepers.
Not the longest-lasting mattress we tested, some customers reported indentations within weeks or years of use – though with its lifetime guarantee against sagging and impressive 101-night trial period, it is worth giving this mattress at least once try.
The Cocoon by Sealy Chill
The Cocoon Chill is a medium-firm bed designed to satisfy most sleepers. It boasts exceptional pressure relief for people who experience back or hip pain when lying down, as well as spinal alignment that protects posture while sleeping in various positions. Meanwhile, The Puffy with three layers of foam offers a soothing body hugging feel as well as cooling features to prevent overheating during the night.
The Cocoon’s hybrid construction sets it apart from other memory foam mattresses. This mattress utilizes polyfoam as its comfort layer while all remaining layers consist of memory foam for excellent contouring and pressure relief. As such, its firmer surface also offers contouring capabilities while remaining pressure relieving.
Like other online-only mattresses, the Cocoon ships in a box and is delivered straight to your door for free. Setup takes less than a minute and boasts soft-to-touch phase change material cover as well as premium coils to ensure optimal comfort and cooling performance.
Heavyweight back and stomach sleepers may find this mattress too firm, even with its top layer of memory foam providing nice contouring effects; however, its firmer surface won’t support your shoulders and hips as effectively. GhostBed wins the best mattress award for side sleepers due to being slightly softer yet providing better pressure relief on hips and shoulders.
Heavier side sleepers will likely find the Cocoon too soft, while lightweight side sleepers should find it ideal. Furthermore, light-weight stomach sleepers will love its firm support; your hips won’t sink too deeply into it while still offering great contouring and support for your spine.
This mattress’s only real drawback is a lack of edge and corner support, which may become problematic if you tend to sit or sleep near the edges of your bed frequently. To mitigate this potential issue, add a mattress topper or pillow that provides adequate edge support – however.
