SleepScore
SleepScore app was designed to help establish healthy sleeping levels and patterns, and then assist you in maintaining them over time. With an efficient user-friendly interface and various interactive tools that assist in understanding your sleeping patterns, as well as its ability to link sleep habits with daily lifestyle activities that could impact their quality, SleepScore can assist in finding solutions to help ensure restful slumber.
SleepScore stands out from its competition by using sound detection, or sonar, to monitor movement while you sleep. The app sends silent signals through speakers on your phone and measures any reflected waves created from chest movements as you breathe – the shape of these waves determines whether you are in light sleep, deep sleep or REM sleep and the app works similar to echolocation used by bats to find food at night.
This feature requires a monthly subscription fee of $4; however, serious users looking to closely study their sleep may find it worthwhile. It syncs with Apple Health and is currently only available on iPhones; an Android version should become available by June. It’s also the only sleep analyzing app which records wake up times without needing screen brightness to activate (making this essential if tracking awakening times).
SleepScore was more accurate in our tests than other apps we tried, though it missed some of Joanne’s woke ups in 2020. It did a better job capturing her REM sleep and it also caught more of Joanne’s recorded awakenings than Sleep Cycle with less false alarms recorded.
Easy to setup and use, though requiring the use of your phone microphone to detect movement and snoring may make some users anxious. According to the company’s claims only movement data is recorded – no voices – with stored locally on your phone for one, 20 or 100 nights before being deleted permanently from memory.
